Regulatory translation is not interpretation work. Every term has a defined legal meaning either in the source regulation or in the target legal system. The translator's job is to find the correct corresponding term in the target legal system, not to invent a plausible-sounding phrase. When the correct term does not exist in the target system, this has to be documented and explained.
Croatia's EU accession created years of directive transposition work. The requirement to render EU law into Croatian, and Croatian regulatory documentation into the languages of EU partner states, created demand for translators who understood both the EU regulatory framework and the Croatian implementing legislation. We built our regulatory team during this period.
GDPR documentation is a consistent area of demand. Privacy policies, data processing agreements, data protection impact assessments and records of processing activities all require consistent terminology that matches the precise language of the regulation. A GDPR privacy policy translated carelessly, with inconsistent use of the defined terms from Article 4, fails its legal purpose.
Public procurement texts require familiarity with the EU Procurement Directives and the national implementing legislation. Tender documents, specifications, evaluation criteria and award notices all have standard terminology in each EU language.
